How I ended up where I am now
I worked in IT for the past 9 years, holding a variety of roles from systems developer at a film company to business analyst in an investment bank. I spent much of 2009 and 2010 pondering my life situation – did I still love my job? did I want to travel more? did I want more free time in my life to use as I choose? I think I knew the answer right from the beginning, but I was scared to make a move.
In the middle of 2010 the balance tipped in my head. I realised the risk of staying in my job was too high, I knew I would look back at myself with disdain in several years. I had no other sensible choice, I had to resign, and I firmly made the decision to do so at the beginning of 2011.
In January of that year I did it. I still had doubts, right up to the minute I waved goodbye to my parents, not knowing when we would next meet, and boarded my one-way flight to Sao Paulo. Ever since I have been travelling around Latin America, and not for one second have I regretted my decision! You can follow my adventures here on Oyster for Breakfast.
I hope you enjoy following my adventures (you can subscribe by email or a feed reader) and I’d love to hear from you if you have any comments, advice, questions, interesting stories, or just fancy a chat..

Love your blog, it’s so inspiring, I can’t free myself yet from the daily burden, but I want to follow your steps, traveling and discovering new realities in other places.
After all, life is what happens in your free time, not what you do inside an office.
Best regards
S.
Thanks “S”, it’s really inspiring for me to hear that I’m inspiring someone else! You know, I think our lives are happening everywhere, in or out of the office, however it’s the quality of life that’s so important. For someone who’s passion is whatever they do in the office, well their office job is probably perfect for them!
If you’d like any more advice on freeing yourself, please get in touch. I’d love to help by using my experience. I also know some resources that may be able to help. You can contact me privately at adam@oysterforbreakfast.com
Hi Adam,
I’m feeling the same way that you were feeling. “I want more free time in my life”, I think the most difficult part is take the decision to move on in a new adventure.
I really like your blog
